Software Development Services & Firmware Development Services

Embedded Firmware &
Software Engineering,
with the hardware

CRATUS provides software development services and firmware development services for connected and embedded products: firmware for microcontrollers and embedded Linux, communication stacks, secure over-the-air updates, edge and cloud software, test automation and AI. One team covers hardware, firmware and software, so they are built to work together.

The challenge

Why software and firmware projects slip.

Most delays don’t come from writing code. They come from the gaps between hardware, firmware and software teams.

Hardware and firmware built apart

When boards and firmware come from different vendors, timing issues and missing debug access surface late, and each side waits on the other.

Devices you can’t update safely

Without secure boot and robust over-the-air updates, every field fix means a site visit and every vulnerability stays open.

Data that never leaves the device

Firmware that works on the bench but has no path to SCADA, the cloud or a dashboard leaves the value of the data unused.

CRATUS closes these gaps at every layer — hardware, firmware, software and AI, engineered by one team.

See our approach

Our approach

One team for the whole stack, from
register to dashboard.

Hardware and firmware built together means optimized timing, lower latency and faster iterations, with no hand-off delays between vendors. The same team carries the data up through edge, cloud and AI.

Hardware

Firmware is only as good as the board it runs on. We bring up new hardware, review schematics and layouts for testability and debug access, and implement FPGA logic where timing demands it, so software is never developed blind.

  • Board bring-up & debug access
  • Schematic & layout reviews
  • FPGA logic where timing demands it

Turn off channel 4, and shed non-critical loads if total current goes above 30 A.

Done. Channel 4 is off, and channels 2 and 3 are marked non-critical and will shed first above 30 A.

Getting started

What firmware development services does CRATUS offer?

CRATUS develops embedded firmware for Arm Cortex-M microcontrollers and embedded Linux processors. That covers drivers and board support packages, bootloaders, bare-metal and RTOS firmware, communication stacks, low-power modes, secure boot and over-the-air updates, plus the tests and documentation to maintain it.

What software development services does CRATUS offer?

CRATUS builds the software around connected devices: edge data pipelines (including ASSET-Rx EDGE), cloud dashboards and device management, REST and MQTT APIs, desktop and mobile commissioning apps, AI models, and end-of-line test and calibration software.

Can you develop firmware for hardware we already have?

Yes. We bring up firmware on existing boards, port code to new microcontrollers, and take over or stabilize existing codebases. A code and architecture review comes first so we can tell you what to keep, fix or rewrite.

Do you design the hardware too?

Yes. CRATUS works as a Team-in-a-Box: electronics, PCB layout, FPGA, mechanics, firmware and software. Hardware and firmware built together means optimized timing, lower latency and faster iterations, with no hand-off delays between vendors.

Firmware

Which microcontrollers and processors do you work with?

From Arm Cortex-M microcontrollers to NVIDIA Jetson-class single-board computers. We select the platform for your requirements on performance, power, cost and supply, or work with the one you already use.

Bare-metal, RTOS or embedded Linux: how do you choose?

Bare-metal suits small, strictly deterministic devices. An RTOS such as FreeRTOS or Zephyr suits firmware with several concurrent tasks and communication stacks. Embedded Linux suits application processors that need networking, storage, displays or AI workloads. We recommend one after reviewing your requirements.

Which communication protocols do you implement?

CAN and CAN FD, CANopen, SAE J1939, MODBUS RTU/TCP, RS-485, IO-Link, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, LoRa, NB-IoT, MQTT and OPC UA. We also write protocol bridges and gateways when two systems don’t share a protocol.

How do you handle over-the-air (OTA) firmware updates?

With a secure bootloader, signed images, A/B partitions and automatic rollback if an update fails, plus staged roll-outs across a device fleet. Updates are versioned and logged, so you always know what is running in the field.

Software

Can you build the cloud and app side of a connected product?

Yes. We build device management, dashboards, alerts and data pipelines, the APIs that connect them, and desktop or mobile apps for commissioning and service. ASSET-Rx EDGE and INTERCAL8 EMS give many projects a proven starting point.

Do you integrate with SCADA, MES or ERP systems?

Yes, over OPC UA, MQTT, MODBUS TCP and REST APIs, to your SCADA, historian, MES or ERP and to your choice of cloud or on-premises servers.

AI

Can you run AI models on embedded devices?

Yes. Compact anomaly-detection and classification models run on Cortex-M microcontrollers next to the sensor; the INTERCAL8 ICL8-TM116, for example, computes predictive thermal insight on-device. Vision and LiDAR workloads run on NVIDIA Jetson-class computers.

Do you develop AI software beyond the device?

Yes: model training and evaluation, annotated and ground-truth reference data for machine learning, analytics pipelines, and natural-language interfaces such as the INTERCAL8 AI Assistant, which lets operators manage power hardware in plain language.

Quality & security

How do you test firmware and software?

Unit tests on the host, hardware-in-the-loop rigs on real boards, static analysis and MISRA C checks, and continuous integration on every change. For production we write end-of-line test software, and we deliver test reports with each release.

How do you secure connected devices?

Secure boot, signed over-the-air updates with rollback, encrypted transport, unique device identity and least-privilege access, following IEC 62443-4-1 secure development practices.

Working with CRATUS

How do we start a project with CRATUS?

Send us a message through our contact form with what you’re building, where it will operate and your timeline. We’ll schedule a technical discovery call, then send a scoped, phased proposal, so you can begin with an architecture study or prototype and commit to production later.

Can you work alongside our in-house engineers?

Yes. We can own the whole system as a Team-in-a-Box, or take a defined piece (the power stage, the firmware, the cloud pipeline, the AI model) and work inside your repositories, toolchains and design reviews.

Can you take the design all the way to production?

Yes. We carry designs from prototype through DFM and DFT reviews, test-fixture and end-of-line test development, pilot builds and full-scale production support.
